As the world continued to rebound from post pandemic challenges, the wheels of commerce spun faster than ever before. Supply chains stabilized, economies functioned normally, and the movement of goods resumed at their pre-pandemic pace. However, with the surge in product movement came a concerning uptick in strategic cargo theft and crime, making the effective use of security seals more critical than ever. In this year-in-review, we explore the landscape of security seals and look back at some of the key trends of 2023.
In 2021 the U.S. transportation system moved a daily average of about 53.6 million tons of freight valued at more than $54 billion (US Dept of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics). This volume increased in 2023, and is projected to rise again in 2024. The Freight Analysis Framework estimates that freight tonnage will increase at about 1.6 percent per year between 2023 and 2050.
With more valuable items in transit, 2023 saw an increase in cargo theft and transport crime. The surge in moving goods, from cross-border trade to local deliveries, led to an increased demand for security seals, especially heavy-duty ones. High-Security Bolt and Cable Seals have become indispensable in ensuring the integrity of high-value shipments, especially during cross-border transit. These seals provide robust protection against tampering and theft, addressing some of the day-to-day challenges posed by supply chain risks. In addition, the demand for Heavy Duty Pull Tight Seals, the leading plastic tamper-evident alternative, rose to all-time highs, as the integrity of food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and other critical staple supply chains were more highly scrutinized.
Each year, the Council of Industry's Manufacturing Champions Award recognizes those individuals and organizations, who through vision, dedication, hard work, and tireless involvement have helped to overcome some of the many obstacles faced by manufacturers in the Hudson Valley community, and in so doing, make it possible for manufacturers and their employees to prosper. In 2023, the Council of Industry recognized Cambridge Security Seals and its CEO, for the company's continued excellence and consistent ability to meet market demand for quality and delivery, especially during the supply chain crises of the pandemic and its aftermath.
In an effort to enhance efficiency and reliability, Cambridge invested in infrastructure upgrades. Additional storage silos and accompanying resin delivery systems were installed, expanding the company's raw material inventory levels and manufacturing capacity by enhancing the production automation that contributes to seamless operations. CSS implemented a customized electronic monitoring system to more effectively track material usage and production in real time, ensuring quicker lead times through optimal resource utilization. As part of the company's Continuous Improvement process, upgrades to the material handling system, from resin through finished product, were implemented, further streamlining the production process and improving an already impressive Quality Assurance program.
A notable achievement in 2023 was a move toward complete in-house printing customization. Cambridge invested in newly developed technology, including an advanced high-speed cutting laser system, expanding the capacity and quality of our laser imprinting and hot stamp die production. These investments not only provide clients with more robust and customized printing solutions but also enhance the overall efficiency and flexibility of the manufacturing process.
Like other advanced American manufacturers, CSS continues to embrace the principles of Industry 4.0, incorporating automation and remote process monitoring across our operations. This technological integration enhances precision, efficiency, and responsiveness. Achieving automation, accurate data collection, and remote monitoring capabilities marks a significant step toward a more interconnected, intelligent, and effective manufacturing ecosystem.
As we reflect on this past year, we are proud to have effectively showcased our abilities to handle the challenges posed by increasing demands for supply and delivery which enabled us to continue providing industry-best support to our customers and partners as we all addressed the higher crime rates involving assets in transit. We've emerged from the pandemic stronger and more adaptable, with a greater appreciation for the importance of what we do how we do it, and for whom we do it. The integration of heavy-duty seals, our commitment to excellence and continuous improvement, enhanced material reliability, and expansive in-house customization, and our accelerating migration toward Industry 4.0 collectively contribute to the resilience and innovation of our company and leadership within the security seal sector. In safeguarding the wheels of commerce, these advancements underscore our commitment to providing robust, customizable solutions for the evolving needs of every customer and their need for supply chain reliability and security.
